I primi film della 21ª edizione del Trieste Science+Fiction Festival

La Cappella Underground è lieta di annunciare i primi film della selezione ufficiale del 21° Trieste Science+Fiction Festival, in programma dal 27 ottobre al 3 novembre 2021 in tre diverse sale: il Politeama Rossetti e il Cinema Ariston di Trieste e, per il secondo anno consecutivo, online nella sala virtuale di MYmovies.

Tra i primi film in concorso nell’edizione 2021 cinque opere in anteprima italiana, rappresentative dell’ampiezza di sguardo audace e avvincente delle storie che andranno a comporre il programma del festival triestino. Questi primi 5 film anticipano il programma completo di oltre 40 film selezionati in tutto il mondo per i tre concorsi principali: il Premio Asteroide e i due concorsi Méliès d’argent della MIFF, la federazione europea Méliès dei festival di cinema fantastico (Méliès International Festivals Federation).

“SETTLERS” di Wyatt Rockefeller (Regno Unito/Sud Africa, 2021) – ANTEPRIMA ITALIANA (Distribuito da Koch Media)
Presentato in anteprima mondiale al Tribeca Film Festival e in arrivo al festival triestino in anteprima nazionale, il film dell’esordiente Wyatt Rockefeller è un audace sci-fi western, dove la nuova frontiera di un futuro non troppo lontano è il pianeta Marte, un luogo desolato e polveroso, in cui i nuovi colonizzatori cercano di sopravvivere a questo mondo sconosciuto e, soprattutto, agli uomini spietati che lo abitano. In una remota fattoria sulla frontiera marziana, una famiglia della Terra si aggrappa alla speranza di una vita migliore, lottando per sopravvivere alle insidie del Pianeta Rosso e, soprattutto, agli altri esseri umani.

“THE PINK CLOUD” di Iuli Gerbase (Brasile, 2021) – ANTEPRIMA ITALIANA
Nel suo esordio cinematografico la regista brasiliana Iuli Gerbase offre uno sguardo acuto e riflessivo per analizzare l’impatto di una misteriosa invasione pandemica sulla vita quotidiana e sulle emozioni delle persone. Il risultato è un film profeticamente rivelatorio, che indaga le conseguenze emotive e psicologiche del lockdown, che arriva al Trieste Science+Fiction Festival in anteprima italiana. «Ho scritto la sceneggiatura di The Pink Cloud nel 2017» – spiega la regista – «La mia intenzione all’epoca era quella di esplorare i diversi percorsi emotivi di due personaggi costretti a vivere sotto un lungo e surreale lockdown. Con due riferimenti in mente: “L’angelo sterminatore” di Buñuel e “A porte chiuse di Sartre”.» Al centro della trama una misteriosa e letale nuvola rosa che appare in tutto il mondo, costringendo l’umanità a restare a casa. Dopo aver trascorso una sola notte insieme, Giovana e Yago saranno costretti a barricarsi in un appartamento, senza alcuna possibilità di uscita, e a vivere come una coppia mentre passano anni di lockdown condiviso. E mentre Yago vive nella sua utopia, Giovana si sente intrappolata…

“ABSOLUTE DENIAL” di Ryan Braund (Regno Unito, 2021) – ANTEPRIMA ITALIANA
Per il suo esordio alla regia il regista Ryan Braund firma un incredibile film di animazione, composto da oltre 30.000 fotogrammi disegnati a mano, che racconta le dinamiche tra uomo e intelligenza artificiale, focalizzandosi sulla competizione tra un supercomputer e il suo creatore. Un programmatore ossessivo e geniale sacrifica la sua vita personale e professionale per costruire il computer più potente del mondo. Dopo settimane di isolamento e la sua esistenza ormai in pezzi, l’uomo si ritroverà ad affrontare una macchina molto più intelligente di lui. «Questo film è iniziato come un progetto molto personale e appassionato» – dichiara il regista– «A causa della pandemia e dei blocchi, sono stato in grado di concentrarmi sull’intricato disegno a mano: oltre 30.000 fotogrammi di animazione! Il film non è solo una celebrazione dell’animazione, ma anche di ciò che può essere creato da remoto e in circostanze avverse». Il film verrà presentato al Trieste Science+fiction in anteprima italiana.

“STRAWBERRY MANSION” di Kentucker Audley e Albert Birney (USA, 2021) – ANTEPRIMA ITALIANA
In un futuro non troppo lontano, uno stato orwelliano controlla tutto e monetizza ogni esperienza umana, riscuotendo tasse persino sui sogni della popolazione. In questo mondo distopico in cui il governo registra e tassa qualunque emozione, il mite agente governativo James Preble si reca in una remota fattoria per controllare i sogni di Arabella “Bella” Isadora, un’anziana ed eccentrica artista. Entrando nel vasto archivio di VHS di Bella, che contiene una vita di sogni, Preble si imbatte in un segreto che gli offre una possibilità di amore e anche una speranza di fuga.

“MAD GOD” di Phil Tippett (USA, 2020) – ANTEPRIMA ITALIANA – FUORI CONCORSO
“Mad God” rappresenta il ritorno a Trieste di Phil Tippett, già premio Asteroide alla carriera nel 2019, con il primo vero e proprio lungometraggio diretto dal mago degli effetti speciali dopo una gestazione trentennale. Il film verrà presentato fuori concorso al festival triestino in anteprima italiana. La carriera di Phil Tippett, pioniere dell’industria dell’animazione e degli effetti visivi, include due Oscar e sei candidature, un BAFTA, due Emmy e i prestigiosi premi Winsor McCay e George Méliès, e attraversa ogni pietra miliare della storia moderna degli effetti visivi, dalle iconiche creature di “Guerre Stellari” al rivoluzionario matrimonio fra tecnologia digitale e stop motion in film come “Robocop”, fino ai dinosauri di “Jurassic Park” e agli insetti giganti di “Starship Troopers”.

La Cappella Underground is happy to announce the first titles of the official selection of the 21st Trieste Science+Fiction Festival, which will take place from October 27 to November 3, 2021 in 3 different theatres: the Politeama Rossetti and the Cinema Ariston in Trieste and, for the second year running, the Mymovies online platform.

Among the first titles in competition in the 2021 edition, 5 Italian premieres, a daring and compelling glimpse of the breadth of stories to be found across the Science+Fiction programme. The first five movies will join an upcoming lineup of over 40 movies selected from over 1000 submissions, competing for the three main awards: the Asteroide award and the two Méliès d’argent awards of the MIFF, the Méliès International Festivals Federation.

A world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival and an Italian premiere in Trieste, Wyatt Rockefeller’s first feature is a bold sci-fi western, where the new frontier of a not too far away future is planet Mars, a desolate and dusty place where the new colonists strive for survival in an unknown world against the ruthless men who inhabit it. In a remote farm on the Martian frontier, a family from Earth clings to the hope of a better life, fighting to survive the perils of the Red Planet and, most of all, of other human beings.

“THE PINK CLOUD” by Iuli Gerbase (Brazil, 2021) – ITALIAN PREMIERE
In her directing debut, the Brazilian director Iuli Gerbase casts her acute and thoughtful gaze on the impact of a mysterious pandemic invasion on people’s everyday life and emotions. The result is a prophetic movie investigating the emotional and psychological consequences of lockdown, a powerful Italian premiere for the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival. “I wrote the script of The Pink Cloud in 2017”, says the director. “My intention at the time was to explore the different emotional paths of two characters forced to live under a long and surrealistic lockdown. With two references in mind: The Exterminating Angel by Buñuel, and No Exit by Sartre”. At the centre of the narrative, a mysterious and deadly pink cloud appears across the globe, forcing everyone to stay home. Strangers at the outset, Giovana and Yago try to invent themselves as a couple as years of shared lockdown pass. While Yago is living in his own utopia, Giovana feels trapped…

“ABSOLUTE DENIAL” by Ryan Braund (United Kingdom, 2021) – ITALIAN PREMIERE
Ryan Braund’s debut as a director is an incredible animation movie of over 30.000 hand-drawn frames, centering on the dynamics between humans and AI and the relation between a researcher and his supercomputer. An obsessive, genius programmer sacrifices everything in his personal and professional life to build a computer of unprecedented power. After weeks in isolation and watching his life crumble around him, he must now confront the ever-increasing problem of a machine that is much smarter than himself. “This film began as a very personal and passionate project”, says the director. “Because of the pandemic and lockdowns I have been able to concentrate on the intricate hand drawing process: more than 30.000 animation frames! The movie is not only a celebration of animation, but also of what can be created remotely and in adverse circumstances”. The movie will be screened at the Trieste Science+fiction as an Italian premiere.

In a future not too far away, an Orwellian State controls everything and profits from every human experience, collecting taxes even on people’s dreams. In this dystopian world where the government records and taxes every single emotion, meek government agent James Preble is sent to a far away farm to control the dreams of Arabella “Bella” Isadora, an old and eccentric artist. By reviewing Bella’s vast VHS archive, Preble discovers a secret which offers him a chance to find love and the hope to escape.

“MAD GOD” by Phil Tippett (USA, 2020) – ITALIAN PREMIERE – OUT OF COMPETITION
Mad God is Phil Tippett’s occasion to come back to Trieste, after winning the Asteroide award for life achievement for his work as a special effects master in 2019, with a feature film as a director, after a thirty years long development process. The movie will screen at the Trieste festival out of competition as an Italian premiere. The career of Phil Tippett, a pioneer in the animation and visual effects industry, includes two Oscars and six nominations to the Academy Awards, a BAFTA, two Emmys and a number of prestigious Winsor McCay and George Méliès awards and spans throughout every milestone of the modern history of visual effects, from the iconic creatures of Star Wars to the revolutionary marriage between digital technologies and stop motion in movies like Robocop, the Jurassic Park dinosaurs and the giant insects of Starship Troopers.
