Richard K. Morgan, autore di Altered Carbon, ospite al TS+FF

L’acclamato autore britannico Richard K. Morgan sarà ospite del Trieste Science+Fiction Festival, la principale manifestazione italiana dedicata alla fantascienza in programma dal 30 ottobre al 4 novembre 2018 nel capoluogo giuliano. Lo scrittore sarà presente in veste di Presidente della giuria del Premio Asteroide, riconoscimento internazionale che ogni anno il Festival dedica al miglior film di science-fiction e fantasy in concorso. Il Premio Asteroide è riservato alle opere prime, seconde o terze di registi emergenti.

Originario del Regno Unito, Richard K. Morgan è l’acclamato autore di The Dark Defiles, The Cold Commands (Esclusi), The Steel Remains (Sopravvissuti), Black Man (pubblicato negli USA con il titolo Thirteen), Woken Furies (Il ritorno delle furie), Market Forces (Business), Broken Angels (Angeli spezzati), e di Altered Carbon, pubblicato in Italia dalla Casa Editrice TEA, selezionato dal New York Times fra i “Notable Books” e vincitore del Philip K. Dick Award nel 2003.
Ha inoltre realizzato le due breve serie di fumetti dei primi anni 2000 che hanno come protagonista la Black Widow della Marvel, e come principale autore i video games Crysis 2 e Syndicate, e ha collaborato ad adattamenti dei suoi lavori in diversi media.

I diritti cinematografici di Altered Carbon (originariamente pubblicato con il titolo “Bay City”) sono stati ceduti a Joel Silver (produttore di film cult come I guerrieri della notte, Matrix e V per vendetta) e alla Warner Bros nell’anno di pubblicazione e la fase di sviluppo cinematografico del libro è andata avanti fino al 2015. Il romanzo è poi divenuto una serie Netflix di dieci episodi prodotta da Skydance Media e Laeta Kalogridis; la serie ha debuttato sulla piattaforma a febbraio 2018, mentre la seconda stagione è attualmente in produzione.

Ispirato dalla letteratura hard boiled, dalle opere di William Gibson, dall’influenza di Blade Runner e ricco di citazioni da film francesi e giapponesi, il romanzo Altered Carbon rappresenta la personale versione del futuro di Morgan: un futuro dalle tinte noir, tecnologicamente avanzato e moralmente corrotto, dove la “vera morte” sembra essere stata sconfitta grazie alla possibilità di digitalizzare la propria coscienza e trasferirla in un altro corpo, come avviene per il protagonista Takeshi Kovacs (nella serie Netflix interpretato dall’attore Joel Kinnaman).

La Warner Bros ha inoltre opzionato i diritti di Market Forces ancor prima della pubblicazione e il libro ha vinto il John W. Campbell Award nel 2005. Black Man si è invece guadagnato l’Arthur C. Clarke Award nel 2007, The Steel Remains il Gaylactic Spectrum award nel 2010, e il suo sequel, The Cold Commands, è stato citato sia da Kirkus Reviews e da NPR fra i libri dell’anno di Fantascienza e Fantasy. Il suo ultimo romanzo, Thin Air, un ritorno alla fantascienza hardboiled, verrà pubblicato ad ottobre.

Famous British writer Richard K. Morgan will be a guest of the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival!

Richard K. Morgan will be participating as President of the jury of the Asteroide Award competition, the prize given each year to the best debut feature science-fiction or fantasy film by an emerging director.

Born in the United Kingdom, Richard K. Morgan is the acclaimed author of The Dark Defiles, The Cold Commands, The Steel Remains, Black Man (published as Thirteen in the U.S.), Woken Furies, Market Forces, Broken Angels, and Altered Carbon, a New York Times Notable Book that won the Philip K. Dick Award in 2003. He was also responsible for a short comicbook run featuring the Marvel character Black Widow in the early 2000s, worked as lead writer for the video games Crysis 2 and Syndicate, and has collaborated on adaptations of his own work in a variety of media.

The movie rights to Altered Carbon (originally published in Italy with the title Bay City) were optioned by Joel Silver (producer of iconic films like The Warriors, The Matrix and V for Victory) and Warner Bros on publication, and the book remained in feature film development until 2015. It is now a 10 episode Netflix series produced by Skydance Media and Laeta Kalogridis; the show launched in February 2018 and a second series is now in production.

Inspired by hardboiled literature, William Gibson’s work and Blade Runner, full of citations from French and Japanese movies, Morgan’s novel Altered Carbon embodies its author’s idea of a future with noir undertones, technologically advanced and morally corrupt, where the “real death” seems to have been beaten thanks to the possibility to digitalize conscience and transfer it in another body, as it happens to the main character, Takeshi Kovacs (portrayed by actor Joel Kinnaman in the Netflix series).

Market Forces, was also optioned to Warner Bros, before it was even published, and it won the John W. Campbell Award in 2005. Black Man won the Arthur C .Clarke Award in 2007, The Steel Remains won the Gaylactic Spectrum award in 2010, and its sequel, The Cold Commands, was listed in both Kirkus Reviews‘ and NPR’s best Science Fiction / Fantasy books of the Year. Richard’s latest novel, Thin Air, a return to hardboiled SF, will be published this October.
