In plague-ravaged medieval Italy, evil Satanist Prince Prospero invites his decadent aristocratic friends to a lavish ball while peasants die outside his impregnable palace. Or is the castle indeed impenetrable? The first of Roger Corman’s acclaimed Vincent Price-Edgar Allan Poe Gothic horror series to be made in Great Britain, and with lush cinematography by Nic Roeg, this classic shocker is as much an homage to Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal as the Poe combo of the original 1842 tale of terror and ‘Hop-Frog’. And the plot regarding the corrupt luxury of a doomed regime remains relevant to this very day.
