The irony of Universal’s adaptation of H.G. Wells’ novel about scientist Jack Griffin (who discovers monocaine, a drug that renders him invisible) is that it made a star of Claude Rains, even though he is seldom seen, only heard, while swathed in bandages and wearing black goggles. Because of the formula, he is turned into a power-mad killer. “Suddendly I realized the power I had, the power to rule, to make the world grovel at my feet,” he proclaims. James Whale’s direction and the effects are marvelous.

James Whale

James Whale
An influential English filmmaker, he is best known for directing classic horror films that defined the genre. Born into a large working-class family in Dudley, England, he discovered his passion for art and theater while held in a German prisoner-of-war camp during WWI.
After finding success as a stage director in London and Broadway, Whale moved to Hollywood. He achieved cinematic immortality at Universal Pictures by directing Frankenstein (1931), The Old Dark House (1932), The Invisible Man (1933), and the masterpiece Bride of Frankenstein (1935). His films were celebrated for their expressive visual style, dark humor, and theatrical flair. He was one of the first openly gay men in Hollywood, and for this reason he was marginalized and mocked as the “Queen of Hollywood.” Thus, he soon retired from the film world to devote himself to painting.
