Dopo aver vinto il premio Asteroide al Trieste Science+Fiction Festival nel 2018 con Freaks e aver diretto nel 2015 il blockbuster Final Destination Bloodlines, i registi Zach Lipovsky e Adam Stein tornano alle loro origini legate ai mutanti.
Dopo una drammatica fuga, Mary e sua figlia Chloe vivono ormai da nomadi, nascondendo poteri e identità dall’Abnormal Defence Force, corpo di polizia paramilitare specializzato in spietati massacri. Mary è pervasa dalla vendetta: vuole trovare Erica Lang, l’ufficiale dell’ADF che ha ucciso il suo primogenito nel tentativo di controllare Chloe, ora una ragazzina precoce e potente il cui desiderio di trovare degli amici finisce per scatenare il caos.
Freaks won the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival Asteroid Award in 2018 and after directing the 2025 blockbuster Final Destination Bloodlines, co-directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein return to their mutant roots. After their traumatic escape, Mary and her daughter Chloe are now living on the road, hiding their powers and identities, and being hunted by the Abnormal Defence Force, paramilitary police that specialize in ruthless extermination. Mary is fuelled by revenge: to find ADF officer Erica Lang who killed her first child while trying to control Chloe, now a precocious and powerful tween whose longing for a friend causes chaos.
«Nel mondo di Freaks, esistono persone con superpoteri, ma non supereroi. Avere abilità speciali in questo mondo non fa di te un eroe ma un bersaglio, etichettato come freak e condannato a morte. Nel primo Freaks, Chloe è una bambina di 7 anni che vive con il padre e desidera ardentemente ritrovare la madre perduta. Cinque anni dopo, in Freaks Part II, Chloe ha 12 anni e vive sulla strada con la madre.
Ma ora ha un’età in cui non le importa più passare del tempo con sua madre; vuole un’amica come lei. Ma come si fa a trovare un’amica quando il mondo intero ti vuole morta? Freaks è sì una storia di superpoteri, ma non parla mai di dominare il mondo o di persone in costumi colorati. Parla di conflitti emotivi in una società violenta: genitori disperati che cercano di proteggere i propri figli, gli ardenti desideri di bambini soli e i sacrifici che potremmo fare per amore. Abbiamo cercato di rinnovare il genere “supereroistico” ed esplorare cosa potrebbe accadere davvero se nel nostro mondo improvvisamente ci fossero persone diverse perché dotate di superpoteri. Sarebbero celebrate come eroi? O prese di mira perché diverse?»

«In the world of Freaks, there are people with powers but no superheroes. Having special abilities in this world doesn’t make you a hero, it makes you a target, labeled a “freak” and marked for death. Because their gifts intensify with each generation, abnormal kids are especially feared. They’re considered “living weapons of mass destruction” and killed on sight.
In the first Freaks movie, Chloe is a 7-year-old girl living with her father and yearning for her lost mother. Five years later, in Freaks Part II, Chloe is 12 and she’s been living on the road with her mother.
But she’s now at an age where she doesn’t care about spending time with her mother anymore; she wants a friend like her. But how do you find a friend when the entire world wants you dead? Freaks is a kind of superpowers story, but it is never about world domination or people in colorful suits. It’s about emotional struggles in a society full of violence: parents desperate to keep their kids safe, the intense yearning of lonely children, and the sacrifices we might make for love. We sought to rip the sheen and polish off the “superhero” genre and explore what might really happen if our world suddenly had people who were different because they had super abilities. Would they be celebrated as heroes? Or targeted because they are different?»

Nel 2018, hanno scritto e diretto il film indipendente Freaks, presentato in 40 festival cinematografici in tutto il mondo. Freaks Part II è il sequel di quel film.
Conosciuti dalle loro troupe come “Zadam”, i due registi hanno diretto il successo hollywoodiano dello scorso anno Final Destination Bloodlines per New Line Cinema. Zach e Adam si sono incontrati per la prima volta 19 anni fa come concorrenti del reality show di Steven Spielberg per aspiranti registi, On The Lot, e da lì è nata una duratura amicizia e una proficua collaborazione.
Stanno attualmente lavorando a diversi progetti a Hollywood, tra cui la regia di un film d’animazione su Venom per Sony Pictures Animation e la sceneggiatura del sequel di Gremlins per il regista Chris Columbus.
In 2018, Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein wrote and directed the indie film Freaks, which played at 40 film festivals around the world. Freaks Part Ii is the sequel to that film.
Known to their crews as “Zadam,” the directing team made last year’s Hollywood hit Final Destination Bloodlines for New Line Cinema. Zach and Adam first met 19 years ago as competitors on Steven Spielberg’s filmmaking reality show On The Lot, resulting in a lasting friendship and a successful directing partnership.
They are currently working on several Hollywood projects, including directing an animated Venom movie for Sony Pictures Animation and writing the Gremlins sequel for director Chris Columbus.
