Premio Asteroide
Concorso internazionale per il miglior film di fantascienza, horror e fantasy riservato alle opere prime, seconde o terze di registi emergenti, raggruppate nella sezione Neon | Competition. Il premio è assegnato da una giuria internazionale composta da professionisti del settore cinematografico ed esperti di cinema fantastico. La giuria 2018 del premio Asteroide è composta da: lo scrittore Richard K. Morgan, la programmatrice internazionale Annick Mahnert, il critico e documentarista Alexandre Poncet.

Motivazione
“Freaks” offre al pubblico un’esperienza completa, esplosiva e coinvolgente, con una straordinaria vastità e portata, e con un sovvertimento ferocemente arguto della forma dominante del cinema attuale. Propone, inoltre, una potente analisi politica della crescente cultura della paranoia che si sta diffondendo nel mondo.

Menzione Speciale
“Await Further Instructions” di Johnny Kevorkian (Gran Bretagna, 2018)

Motivazione
“Await Further Instructions” è il primo film di genere post-Brexit: contiene una critica politica di brutale potenza; è un’opera premonitrice rispetto ai nostri tempi e costituirà per molti anni a venire un fondamentale punto di riferimento.

Premio Méliès d’argent – Lungometraggi
Il concorso è organizzato in collaborazione con la European Fantastic Film Festivals Federation (EFFFF) ed è riservato ai lungometraggi di genere fantastico di produzione europea. Il premio è assegnato da una giuria di professionisti del settore cinematografico e vale anche come nomination per partecipare all’annuale concorso per il Premio Méliès d’or. La Giuria 2018 del premio Méliès d’argent è composta da: il giornalista e critico cinematografico Enrico Magrelli, il docente e critico cinematografico Roy Menarini, il giornalista e scrittore Alessandro Mezzena Lona.

“Man Divided” di Max Kestner (Danimarca, Svezia, Finlandia 2017)

Motivazione
“Man Divided”, opera prima di fiction di un regista già apprezzato per i suoi documentari come Max Kestner, convince per la sua originalità narrativa nel saper reinventare temi classici: i viaggi nel tempo, l’incertezza della sopravvivenza in un futuro non lontanissimo, gli inquieti tormenti del doppio. Diretto con mano ferma, recitato con grande equilibrio, il film spalanca un orizzonte finora sconosciuto nel cinema fantastico, quello della Danimarca e del Nord Europa, da seguire con attenzione.

Premio Méliès d’argent – Short Competition
Il concorso è organizzato in collaborazione con la European Fantastic Film Festivals Federation (EFFFF) ed è riservato ai cortometraggi di genere fantastico di produzione europea. Il premio è assegnato al cortometraggio che riceve il maggior numero di voti dal pubblico in sala e vale anche come nomination per partecipare all’annuale concorso per il Premio Méliès d’or.

Nell’offerta di livello sempre all’altezza del Trieste Science+Fiction Festival, il premio Wonderland di RAI4 va al film “Freaks” che reinterpreta con ironica originalità il tema dei superpoteri e la condizione dell’alterità, ribaltando il classico punto di vista e riuscendo a restituire inedita freschezza al cinema di genere.

Stars’ War – Premio della Critica Web
Decretano la miglior opera prima dell’edizione 2018 del Festival nove testate online presenti al Festival: BadTaste, Blow Out, Cineblog, CineClandestino, CineLapsus, Cinematographe, Quinlan, Sentieri Selvaggi e Taxi Drivers.

Riconoscimento assegnato ad un’opera significativa e originale per l’evoluzione del cinema di genere da Nocturno, la principale rivista italiana dedicata al cinema di genere.

Motivazione
Attualissimo e retrò allo stesso tempo, il film è una spassosa, frenetica e terrificante escursione in una Twilight Zone dove i generi si fondono e trovano una nuova dimensione.

Premio CineLab Spazio Corto
Il premio è organizzato in collaborazione con il DAMS (Discipline delle arti della musica e dello spettacolo), Corso di studi interateneo Università degli Studi di Udine e Università degli Studi di Trieste, ed è riservato al miglior cortometraggio italiano presentato nella sezione Spazio Italia | Spazio Corto. Il premio viene assegnato da una giuria composta da studenti. La giuria 2018 è composta da Leandro Urbani, Edoardo Vidiz, Riccardo Tonon, Ajad Noor e Luciano Ranaldi.

”Herd” di Mattia Temponi (Italia, 2018)

Motivazione
Dopo un’attenta e oculata analisi dei cortometraggi in concorso al festival, la giuria ha deciso di assegnare il premio CineLab Spazio Corto al cortometraggio di Mattia Temponi “Herd”. Un’opera che riesce a coniugare allo stesso tempo forma e sostanza riuscendo a veicolare in maniera chiara e ironica il proprio messaggio attraverso il genere cinematografico, cosa che la giuria reputa manchi in italia ora come ora. La paura immaginaria del diverso e dello sconosciuto e la sempre più dirompente irruenza dei mass media nelle nostre vite, che passivamente ci influenza di giorno in giorno. sono i temi affrontati nei 14 minuti di questo intelligente cortometraggio, che viene accompagnato da un’ottima messa in scena e da un reparto tecnico molto valido, che trova il suo punto di forza in un’intensa fotografia e un ritmo molto coinvolgente.

Il Premio Urania d’Argento viene conferito dal 2002 a una personalità di spicco nel mondo del fantastico, in collaborazione con l’omonima testata letteraria Mondadori.

Asteroide Award
International competition for the best science fiction, horror or fantasy film by emerging directors at their first, second or third feature film. The prize of the Neon| Competition is awarded by an international jury of cinema professionals and experts of fantastic cinema. The members of the Asteroide Award 2018 Jury are: writer Richard K. Morgan, international programmer Annick Mahnert, film critic and documentarist Alexandre Poncet.

“Await Further Instructions” by Johnny Kevorkian (Great Britain, 2018)

Justification
“Await Further Instructions” is the first post-Brexit genre film. It contains a savagely powerful political critique, it is prescient for the times and will be acutely relevant for many years to come.

Synopsis – Freaks
Directly from Toronto, a sci-fi thriller where a brave little girl escapes her father’s paranoid and hyperprotective control to discover that the world can be cruel to those who are different. No spoilers: let yourselves be embraced by mistery and enjoy this delightful Canadian debut… and the unsettling performances by Emile Hirsch and Bruce Dern.

Synopsis – Await Further Instructions
It’s Christmas day and the Milgram family find a mysterious black substance surrounding their house while on the TV screen a message glows ominously: “Stay Indoors and Await Further Instructions”. A terrifying battle to survive in Cronenberg’s style in the terrifyingly fascinating second feature film by British director Johnny Kevorkian.

Méliès d’argent Award – Feature Film
The jury of cinema professionals of this competition, organized in collaboration with the European Fantastic Film Festivals Federation (EFFFF), awards the prize for the best European fantastic feature film, which also counts as a nomination to take part in the annual competition for the Méliès d’or Award. Members of this year’s jury are: journalist and film critic Enrico Magrelli, film teacher and critic Roy Menarini, journalist and writer Alessandro Mezzena Lona.

“Man Divided” by Max Kestner (Denmark, Sweden, Finland 2017)

Justification
“Man Divided”, the first fiction film by respected documentary director Max Kestner, convinces for its narrative originality and its skill in re-inventing classic themes: time traveling, the insecurity of survival in a not-so-distant future, the restless anxiety of the double. The film is directed with a steady hand and the acting shows great balance, disclosing a so far unknown horizon of the fantastic cinema, which belongs to Denmark and to Northern Europe, and that ought to be followed carefully.

Synopsis – Man Divided
2095. The world is ravaged by ecological disaster: all natural freshwater is gone. Fang Rung has undergone molecular fissionto send his other half, code name Gordon Thomas, back in time in search of a scientistwhose ground-breaking research was lost before it could save the world. Documentarist Max Kestner’s first fiction film is a not-to-be-missed Danish sci-fi!

Méliès d’argent Award – Short Film Competition
This competition is organized in collaboration with the European Fantastic Film Festivals Federation (EFFFF) and awards the best European fantastic short film. The prize is awarded to the short film that gets the most votes from the audience and also counts as a nomination to the annual competition for the Méliès d’or Award.

Stars’ War – Web Critics Award
The award to the best feature film is given by nine representatives of the web press attending the Festival: BadTaste, Blow Out, Cineblog, CineClandestino, CineLapsus, Cinematographe, Quinlan, Sentieri Selvaggi, and Taxi Drivers.

Nocturno New Visions Award
The award is given by Nocturno, the main Italian genre cinema magazine, to an original and significant work for the progress of genre movies.

Very topical and retro at the same time, the movie is a hilarious, frenetic and terrifying journey into a Twilight Zone where genres mix and find new dimensions.

CineLab Spazio Corto Award
The award, in collaboration with DAMS (Arts, Music and Entertainment Disciplines), an inter-university course by Udine and Trieste Universities, goes to the best Italian short film presented in the Spazio Italia | Spazio Corto programme. The 2018 jury members are: Leandro Urbani, Edoardo Vidiz, Riccardo Tonon, Ajad Noor, and Luciano Ranaldi.

“Herd” by Mattia Temponi (Italy, 2018)

Justification
After a careful and detailed analysis of the short films in these sections, the jury decided the CineLab Spazio Corto Award goes to “Herd” by Mattia Temponi. A movie which succeeds in combining form and substance, conveying its message clearly and ironically through genre, something lacking in Italy in the time being, according to the jury. The imaginary fear of the alien and the unknown and the increasingly explosive influence of mass media in our lives, passively affecting us every day, are the themes of this 14 minutes long, very bright short film, together with excellent staging, a very capable technical department, the stronghold of an intense photography, and a very captivating rhythm.

Synopsis – Herd
A girl wakes up in the house of a man she met the night before. They slept together, but she does not know anything about him and, when she suspects she’s in danger, terror takes over.

Audience Award
This competition is reserved to feature fiction films in any programmes, except for the Classix. The prize is awarded to the film which receives the most votes from the audience.

“Lajko Gipsy in Space” by Balazs Lengyel (Hungary, 2018)

Synopsis – Lajko Gipsy in Space
A black comedy teaching us that the first live being sent to space was not a dog named Lajka, but a young Roma man, pilot of vaporizer planes, named Lajko. Because, when the Soviet Union conceded Hungary the honor of selecting the first cosmonaut to be sent to space, the choice fell on the most unlikely candidate .

Urania d’Argento Life Achievement Award
Since 2002, the Urania d’argento Award has been given to a leading personality of the fantastic world, in collaboration with the “Urania” book series published by Mondadori.

18 YEARS OF TRIESTE SCIENCE+FICTION
The Trieste Science+Fiction Festival offers again in its 18th edition world, international and national premieres in three international competition sections: The Asteroide Award, international competition for the best science fiction film by emerging directors from all over the world, and the two Méliès d’argent awards of the European Fantastic Film Festivals Federation for the best European fantastic genre feature film and short film. The Spazio Italia section will present the best Italian productions. Finally, the unmissable Futurology meetings will focus on science and literature, in collaboration with the main scientific institutes of the local territory and the Urania d’argento Life Achievement Award to a fantastic genre master.

Since the year 2000, the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival has collected the inheritance of the Trieste International Science Fiction Film Festival which took place from 1963 to 1982, the first genre film festival in Italy and one of the first in Europe.

The Trieste Science+Fiction Festival is organized by the Film and audiovisual research and experimentation centre La Cappella Underground with the support of and in collaboration with MiBAC – Direzione Generale per il Cinema, Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia, Comune di Trieste, Università degli Studi di Trieste, Fondazione CRTrieste, Kathleen Foreman Casali Foundation, ARPA FVG – LaREA, PromoTurismo FVG, Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia, Fondazione Teatro Lirico Giuseppe Verdi di Trieste.

The Trieste Science+Fiction Festival is part of AFIC – Italian Film Festivals Association and of the proESOF project. The festival is supported by the main scientific institutes of the local territory: AREA Science Park, ICGEB, ICTP, INAF – Trieste Astronomic Observatory, IS Immaginario Scientifico – Science Centre, SISSA.

The Rossetti Politeama theatre is the main venue of the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival. The Casa del Cinema building, home of the most important film culture associations in Trieste, will be the festival’s headquarters, and with the collaboration of the Miela Theatre will be hosting the festival’s collateral sections, while other initiatives and special programs will take place in the Ariston arthouse theatre.
