Uno dei più riusciti adattamenti da fumetto, insieme a Diabolik (1967) di Bava, vincitore del primo premio al Festival di Trieste del 1966, era stato concepito come film per bambini, ma si è sviluppato in una commedia matura e folle. Una scienziata sviluppa un sonnigrafo, in grado di materializzare le immagini dei sogni su uno schermo e quindi di trasformare gli incubi in sogni piacevoli e tranquilli. Quando utilizza la sua invenzione sul marito, scopre che i sogni di lui hanno per protagonista un’attraente eroina dei fumetti, Jessie, vestita come Li’l Abner e sempre inseguita da un cowboy malvagio e da un supereroe anch’egli arrogante. Quando la moglie puritana cerca di migliorare i sogni del marito, la macchina ha un malfunzionamento e, invece di scomparire, i personaggi dei fumetti appaiono in carne e ossa nell’appartamento della coppia, portando il caos nelle loro vite. Vorluicek, in seguito, ha realizzato una serie di commedie fantasy su marchingegni che trasformano i desideri in realtà. […] Le interpretazioni di Sovak, un habitué di Vorluicek, e di Medricka, così come quella della bella Shoberova, in seguito messa sotto contratto dalla Hammer per recitare in The Vengeance of She (1968) con lo pseudonimo di Olinka Berova, sono semplicemente magnifiche. One of the loveliest comic-strip stories around, together with Bava’s Diabolic (1967), and winner of the first prize at the Trieste Festival of 1966, this started out as a children’s film but developed into a full-blown crazy comedy. A female scientist develops a somnigraph which can reproduce dream images on a screen and then manipulate nightmarish dreams to change them into peaceful ones. When she uses it on her husband, she discovers his dreams about a luscious comic-strip heroine, Jessie dressed à la Li’l Abner, always chased by an evil cowboy and an equally overbearing superhero. When the straight-laced wife attempts to improve her husband’s dreamworld, the machine malfunctions and, instead of disappearing, the comic-strip characters appear live in the couple’s flat, causing chaos in their lives. Vorluicek went on to make a series of fantasy comedies about contraptions that turn desires into reality. […] The acting by Vorluicek’s regular, Sovak, and by Medricka, as well as the beautiful Shoberova, who was subsequently signed by Hammer to star in The Vengeance of She (1968) under the name Olinka Berova, is absolutely delightful. The photography is by the expert Nemecek, who also collaborated with Milos Forman.
