E’ il 1944, dopo la vittoria di Franco, una ragazzina di nome Ofelia viaggia con la madre e il padre adottivo verso un’area rurale nel Nord della Spagna. La ragazzina vive in un mondo immaginario di sua creazione, disillusa ormai dalla realtà. La repressione fascista del dopoguerra è all’apice e la ragazzina, per poterla affrontare, si inventa una favola. Ma per Ofelia, le storie sul bene e sul male, la magia e il guardaboschi sono più di un semplice intrattenimento: sono la finestra sul mondo, che le ricorda quali sono le verità e i misteri della vita quotidiana. Una libellula cattura l’attenzione di Ofelia durante una sosta di una gita fuori porta: ciò che inizia a seguire non è un insetto ma un ambasciatore luccicante di smeraldo che le dà il benvenuto nel suo regno.

Pan’s Labyrinth is the story of a young girl that travels with her mother and step-father to a rural area in the north of Spain in 1944, after Franco’s victory. The girl lives in an imaginary world of her own imagination, already disillusioned with the real world. Post-war Fascist repression is at its height in rural Spain and the girl must come to terms with that through a fable of her own. But for Ofelia, fables of good and evil, magic and fauns are more than simple entertainment. They are her window onto the world, awakening her to life’s everyday possibilities and mysteries. When a dragonfly captures Ofelia’s attention during a roadside stop, it is not a gangly insect that she follows but a glistening emerald ambassador, welcoming her to his domain.
