Oltre ad essere la prima apparizione di Jon Pertwee nei panni di Doctor Who, questa storia in quattro episodi si distingue per essere stata la prima a colori su pellicola. Il copione di Robert Holmes, uno dei migliori autori della serie, ricorda “Quatermass Ii” del 1955 e deve Doctor Who alle prese con una nuova minaccia di invasione aliena, proveniente questa volta da Nestene. In addiction to being Jon Pertwee’s first appearance as the Doctor, this four-part story was also notable for being the first story to be shot in colour, and the first of only two episodes to be shot entirely on film. With a script by Robert Holmes (one of the best writers to have worked on the series), the Doctor is again presented with another alien invasion threat to Earth, this time from the Nestene. In a story reminiscent of Nigel Kneale’s “Quatermass II” (1955), meteorites are landing on Earth containing fragments of an alien consciousness, which, when united together, work on colonising the Earth. To this end, the Nestene have the ability of controlling plastic, which they do here in the form of mannequins, known as Autons. The sequences with the Autons smashing their way out of shop windows and going on the rampage down British streets remain some of the most abiding images of any Doctor Who story. Spearhead From Space is also of note for the second appearance of UNIT ( United Nations Intelligence Task Force), an army unit led by Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, which was to be a popular fixture of the series during the Pertwee years.
