Fuggendo da un violento crimine, Eleanor e Clara, due misteriose e squattrinate giovani, giungono in una decadente località turistica. Qui Clara incontra Noel, un ragazzo riservato e solitario, che offre loro un tetto in una squallida pensione chiamata Byzantium. Nel frattempo l’eterna ragazzina Eleanor incontra Frank, un ragazzo dallo spirito affine, che la induce involontariamente a rivelare la verità sulla sua vita: lei e sua madre Clara per restare in vita devono nutrirsi di sangue umano. Nel piccolo, silenzioso borgo la gente inizia a morire. E il passato, dal quale le ragazze fuggono da tanto tempo, si ripresenta con conseguenze inaspettate.
Neil Jordan è nato a Sligo County, in Irlanda, nel 1950. Già affermato scrittore di romanzi, inizia la sua carriera cinematografica nel 1982 scrivendo e realizzando il lungometraggio Angel. Nel 1984 dirige il film dell’orrore In compagnia dei lupi, ma è solo nel 1986 che raggiunge la fama internazionale con il film Mona Lisa. Nel 1992 la sua carriera si consolida grazie a La moglie del soldato, Premio Oscar per la miglior sceneggiatura, e in seguito con due film di grandissimo successo popolare: Intervista col vampiro (1994) e Michael Collins (1996). L’anno seguente vince l’Orso d’argento alla Berlinale con The Butcher Boy (1997). È anche autore della celebre serie televisiva I Borgia.
Eleanor and Clara, two mysterious and penniless young women, flee the scene of a violent crime and arrive in a run-down coastal resort. Clara, soon meets shy and lonely Noel, who provides a roof over their heads in his seedy guesthouse, Byzantium. Meanwhile Eleanor, the eternal schoolgirl, meets Frank, a kindred spirit who unwittingly prompts her to tell the truth about her life. She confesses that she must drink human blood to stay alive – and so must her mother. In the small, quiet town, people start to die. And the past that the girls have been running from for so long, finally catches up with them – with astonishing consequences.
Neil Jordan was born in Sligo County, Ireland in 1950. Jordan began his career as an acclaimed fiction writer. In 1982 he wrote and directed his first film Angel and in 1984 the horror movie The Company of Wolves but it was in 1986 that he received real success with Mona Lisa. In 1992 his career was truly established with the Crying Game (Academy Award for the best screenplay). Next came two highly popular films, Interview with the Vampire and Michael Collins. He also won the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlinale for The Butcher Boy (1997). He is the author of the worldwide tv series sucess The Borgias.
