Basato su dati relativi ai bombardamenti di Dresda, Berlino, Tokyo e alle esplosioni atomiche di Hiroshima e Nagasaki, il film di Watkins, realizzato con un budget ridotto e interamente girato in esterni, persegue – e terrificantemente raggiunge – un realismo convincente e implacabile.

Funded by the BBC, this controversial and harrowing docudrama depicting a hypothetical nuclear attack on the county of Kent in Great Britain following the escalation of an East-West conflict wasn’t shown on television for 20 years. Instead it was reluctantly given a theatrical release and garnered huge critical praise internationally, winning a number of prizes, including an Academy Award. Based on data from the air attacks on Dresden, Berlin, Tokyo and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Watkins’ low-budget worst-case-scenario was shot entirely on location and strives for, and horrifyingly achieves, a convincing and unflinching realism.
