Questo film austero è ambientato in un mondo post-olocausto nucleare in cui i miseri resti del genere umano aspettano un’arca di Noè che li porti in salvo. Sthur è l’eroe che tenta di stabilire se ci sia un qualche fondamento di verità dietro al mito, Janda è una donna pragmatica che preferisce una vita da prostituta a un futuro incerto e Dmochowski è l’ingegnere che sa che l’Arca giungerà – e quando alla fine arriva esplode distruggendo la Terra. Costruito in modo molto teatrale, il desolante futuro presagito è reso in modo ottimale in quanto viene solo accennato (spesso con sprazzi di comicità) e non è presentato minuziosamente. Sicuramente in contrasto con la maggior parte dei film di fantascienza degli anni ’80, stimola un elemento di riflessione in quella stessa maniera che aveva reso il genere così produttivo negli anni ’50.

Set in a post-nuclear-holocaust world in which the ragged remnants of mankind wait for a Noah’s Ark to take them to salvation, this is an austere film. Sthur is the hero who tries to establish if there is any truth behind the myth, Janda the pragmatic woman who prefers life as a whore to a doubtful future and Dmochowski the engineer who knows the Ark will come– and indeed when it finally arrives it explodes, bringing an end to the Earth. Highly theatrically constructed, the bleak future it envisages is all the better for being suggested (often with comic inflections) rather presented in great detail. Certainly in contrast to most Science Fiction films of the eighties, it retains the questioning element that made genre so fruitful in the fifties.
