Al fine di studiare esemplari della specie umana nella vita reale così come in cattività, gli alieni rapiscono un uomo e una donna in una foresta e li rinchiudono nudi in una gabbia invisibile sospesa nel buio. Le due cavie sono Agata, pittrice dal temperamento vulcanico, e Bertrand, un confuso e meditabondo musicista. Man mano che l’osservatore si interroga su come gli esseri umani utilizzino una serie di oggetti di uso quotidiano (dal WC al pollo che mangiamo), uno ad uno tali oggetti vengono fatti cadere nella gabbia per studiare le reazioni delle due cavie. Nel frattempo, i rispettivi partner ancora sulla terra, Donatien e Ursuline, si incontrano, ritrovandosi presto al centro di una caotica convivenza, vista attraverso le ignorate lenti aliene.
In order to observe the human subjects in the wild and under controlled situations, the aliens pluck two strangers, a man and a woman, from a forest and drop them — naked — into a clear cage suspended in darkness. Exhibit A is painter Agathe, whose volcanic temper is offset by the confused brooding of Exhibit B, musician Bertrand. As the narrator speculates on the uses of everyday objects, including toilets, chickens and felt-tipped pens, one of each item is obligingly dropped into the cell to see what the humans will do with it. Meanwhile, Exhibit A and B’s respective spouses, Donatien and Ursuline, meet and soon begin an uneasy cohabitation observed in all its messy confusion by the unseen alien lensers.
