The not so distant future when poor air quality leads to people living mostly virtually lives. Carol is a dissatisfied career mother, struggling with her marriage and child. With the grinding familiarity of their home lives feeling increasingly claustrophobic, and worried about divorce, Carol leaps at the chance to get her life back on track by signing up for ‘DreamQuil’, an avant-garde digital wellness retreat. But when Carol returns home, she discovers her family has been living with ‘Carol 2’, a robot the corporation sent to help in her absence, and things take a mysterious and sinister turn.

«DreamQuil is my first feature film. I wrote it with my sister Vanessa during the pandemic. We wanted to find a way to speak about our humanity as we exist in a world constantly pressuring us to surrender to machines. Set in a retro near-future, this is a story about a family entangled in something much greater than themselves, and how Carol, the protagonist, ultimately manages to “survive” her worst nightmare. My hope is that audiences walk away feeling invigorated and reflective of the current state of society as it relates to Artificial Intelligence, automation and our personal data. We’re living through a new revolution and a lot of people are confused and feel hopeless against the change, but movies offer a portal into an uncomfortable and seemingly chaotic subject through entertainment and thrills that can invite conversation into deeper discussions and better understanding. We can all relate to Carol in some way, so I hope to ignite personal feelings in audiences that connect them to the larger stakes we all currently face.
Mixed with inspiration of a Hitchcockian suspense, a Lynchian absurdity, and a brutal tragedy of DouglasSirk, it was important to me to approach every frame of this movie as handmade and practical as possible, so there is a human imprint even in the most subtle details. DreamQuil is a love letter to the craftsmanship of cinema. I worked with over 370 craftsmen to build sets, miniatures, matte paintings, painted backdrops and special effects; every in-camera classic Hollywood technique I could muster to create a story about what it is to be human in a world ever more dependent on machines and ripe with ways to keep us distracted.»
