Passeggiata alla scoperta delle location di “Napoli – New York” di Gabriele Salvatores

Trasformare sullo schermo Trieste in New York: sembrava un’impresa impossibile, invece la magia è riuscita a Gabriele Salvatores nel suo ultimo film Napoli – New York. La maggior parte del film, ambientata nella Grande Mela, è stata infatti girata a Trieste, trovando gli scorci giusti e con uno stupefacente lavoro di post-produzione per il quale l’artista degli effetti visivi Victor Perez ha vinto il Premio David di Donatello nel 2025.
Com’è tradizione nelle passeggiate cinematografiche organizzate dalla Casa del Cinema di Trieste, vi porteremo a scoprire come il cinema reinventa i luoghi più inaspettati, ma anche più comuni, della città. In questo caso vi riveleremo come, attraverso lo sguardo del regista Premio Oscar, le vie triestine si sono trasformate nelle strade newyorchesi più celebri, raccontandovi anche i segreti del lavoro dietro le quinte, animato da una troupe di più di 60 persone impegnata a ricreare l’America della fine degli anni Quaranta.
Sveleremo come il Porto Vecchio, lo stabilimento Stock di Roiano, Palazzo Carciotti, ma anche il Salone degli Incanti, la Stazione Marittima, Palazzo Berlam, la Chiesa di Sant’Antonio, Palazzo Vivante e gli esterni dell’Hotel Savoia hanno preso l’aspetto della Fifth Avenue o della Broadway. Victor Perez, mago degli effetti speciali anche di tanti film hollywoodiani come “Harry Potter e i Doni della morte” e “Il cavaliere oscuro”, ha aggiunto sapientemente in digitale palazzi e grattacieli con una tecnica innovativa quasi mai sperimentata in Italia, ma l’opera di trasformazione è iniziato sul set.
Il risultato è una New York credibilissima, ma anche immaginata: così l’avrebbero voluta Federico Fellini e Tullio Pinelli, autori del soggetto inedito dal quale il film è tratto. Ed è anche una metropoli grandiosa, vista ad altezza di bambino: Napoli – New York racconta infatti di Carmine e Celestina, interpretati dai piccoli attori Dea Lanzaro e Antonio Guerra, due bambini orfani e senza una lira che, nell’immediato dopoguerra, da Napoli decidono di imbarcarsi clandestinamente su una nave diretta a New York alla ricerca di un futuro migliore in America, incrociando i destini di tanti altri emigrati italiani. Li aiuterà un commissario di bordo speciale, interpretato da Pierfrancesco Favino.
Il percorso inizierà nell’aula al secondo piano della Casa del Cinema, dove Elisa Grando mostrerà alcune immagini e sequenze tratte dal film, insieme a fotografie dal set: uno sguardo dietro le quinte per scoprire come Trieste si è trasformata, grazie alla visione di Gabriele Salvatores, in una credibile e affascinante New York del dopoguerra. Subito dopo, tutti insieme, partiremo per la passeggiata nei luoghi del set.

Turning Trieste into New York on screen might have seemed like an impossible task, but Gabriele Salvatores achieved movie magic in his latest film, Napoli – New York. Although much of the film is set in the Big Apple, it was actually filmed primarily in Trieste. With carefully chosen locations and an astonishing post-production effort, visual effects artist Victor Perez brought New York to life so convincingly that he won the David di Donatello Award in 2025 for his work.

As is tradition in the film-themed walks organized by Casa del Cinema di Trieste, we’ll take you on a journey to discover how cinema transforms the most unexpected—and even the most familiar—corners of the city. This time, we’ll reveal how, through the eyes of the Oscar-winning director, Trieste’s streets became some of New York’s most iconic venues. You’ll also get a peek behind the scenes, where a crew of over 60 people worked tirelessly to recreate 1940s America.

You’ll find out how locations such as the Porto Vecchio, the Stock factory in Roiano, Palazzo Carciotti, the Salone degli Incanti, the Stazione Marittima, Palazzo Berlam, the Church of Sant’Antonio, Palazzo Vivante, and the exterior of the Hotel Savoia were transformed into landmarks like Fifth Avenue and Broadway.
Victor Perez, the special effects wizard behind Hollywood blockbusters like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and The Dark Knight, digitally inserted buildings and skyscrapers using a groundbreaking technique rarely used in Italy. But the transformation started well before post-production—right on set.

The result? A New York that’s entirely believable, yet also imagined—a city just as Federico Fellini and Tullio Pinelli might have dreamed it. The film is based on an unpublished story written by the two Italian cinema legends. It’s also a big metropolis seen from a child’s point of view: Napoli – New York tells the tale of Carmine and Celestina, played by young actors Dea Lanzaro and Antonio Guerra, two penniless orphans who, in the immediate post-war period, stow away on a ship from Naples to New York in search of a better future. Along the way, they cross paths with countless other Italian emigrants and find help from a special ship’s officer, played by Pierfrancesco Favino.

The experience begins on the second floor of the Casa del Cinema, where Elisa Grando will present selected clips and stills from the film, along with behind-the-scenes photos—an insider’s look at how Trieste was transformed into a stunningly believable postwar New York, thanks to Salvatores’ vision.
Afterwards, we’ll head out together for a walking tour of the film’s locations.
