II medico legale dottor Chapin e il suo assistente David Morris scoprono, anche attraverso esperimenti su se stessi tramite LSD, che la paura può far nascere nell’uomo il “tingler” (“brivido”). Per evitare i suoi attacchi, che sono segnalati da uno strano formicolio, bisogna mettersi a gridare a perdifiato. La signora Higgins, che assieme al marito gestisce un cinema e che è sordomuta, ne rimane vittima e viene trovata morta di spavento. Sezionando il suo cadavere Chapin riesce a individuare ed isolare l’elemento, che si presenta come una piccola mostruosa creatura dalle antenne viscide che si forma accanto alla colonna vertebrale e si nutre di midollo spinale.

The pathologist Doctor Chapin and his assistant David Morris discover through experimentation with LSD, that fear can cause the ‘tingler’ to grow inside man. To prevent this growth, signalled by a strange tingling sensation, we scream when something frightens us. Mrs Higgins who was deaf and dumb, and therefore could not scream, ran a cinema along with her husband and was one day found dead, having died of fright. By dissecting Mrs Higgins body, Chapin is able to identify the cause of fright and therefore death, which comes in the form of a little creature with slimy antennae that forms and feeds on the spinal cord.
