On a distant planet, a robot explores the landscape in search of minerals and signs of life. Light-years away, in one of the oldest mines in the world, its inhabitants live surrounded by buried towns under mountains of mineral waste, while astrobiologists investigate a hidden biosphere that raises a disturbing evolutionary hypothesis. A mesmerizing cinematic experience which weaves together documentary, flamenco and science fiction, and excavates the social, historical and speculative strata of a landscape between exploration and exploitation, Andalusia and Mars.

«While making my film The Sasha, I became fascinated by the cinematic potential of scientific images. I was drawn to this perspective both as an expression of humanity’s quest for transcendence and as an emblem of progress—always seeking to go “further”. An urge that was at the core of the colonial myth and today seems re-born in a new Terra Incognita: outer space.
I then began researching the photographic archive produced by a robot currently roaming the surface of Mars, whose name seems to respond to our impulse to transcend limits: Curiosity. I was fascinated by the paradox of an inanimate being searching for life, and by how this image reflects the increasingly blurred boundaries between the natural and the artificial, the living and the non-living.
Como Todo Mortal is a film that interlaces reality and speculative fiction to reveal the different layers of time and place that coexist in a landscape like Rio Tinto. A place that exists on an imaginary line between Andalucía and Mars, where its colonial past becomes interlaced with speculative theories about the early colonisation of Earth and the future of space colonisation. In the film, I invite the spectator to reflect about the vital entanglements that we are part of through a landscape where the temporal and spatial scale of humans is constantly questioned. Como Todo Mortal is a film that digs into the limits of life and our insatiable thirst for discovery, bringing together the lyricism of science fiction with the everyday life of an Andalusian mining town.»
