Two meetings dedicated to the challenges of the present and potential future scenarios will be held at the Spazio Underground of the Cinema Ariston in Trieste. The presentations are organized by the Albert Schweitzer Study Center in collaboration with the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival and supported by the Otto per Mille Valdese.
The first event takes place on Thursday, March 12 at 6:00 PM with the talk 'In His Image and Likeness: Ethical Challenges of Artificial Intelligence' (A sua immagine e somiglianza. Sfide etiche dell’intelligenza artificiale), a discussion dedicated to the ethical implications of new technologies and the relationship between innovation and responsibility. Speakers include Luca Zorloni, Head of Editorial Content at Wired Italia, and Ilenya Goss, Waldensian pastor and bioethicist. The session will be moderated by Eva Valvo, president of the Albert Schweitzer Study Center.
The second event is scheduled for Friday, March 13 at 6:00 PM with 'Hypertourism Between Reality and Dystopia' (Iperturismo tra realtà e distopia), the presentation of the novel Il paese più bello del mondo (The Most Beautiful Country in the World, published by Bookabook). Author Luca Zorloni will be in conversation with Peter Ciaccio, pastor of the Methodist and Waldensian Church of Trieste.
Set in an Italy of 2032, the novel envisions a future where cities of art have been transformed into theme parks that recreate the past for foreign tourists, offering the experience of visiting Goldoni's Venice or Dante's Florence. Yet behind the facade of preserving historical heritage lies an authoritarian system that forces citizens to work in the parks and obey the regime. Opposing it is a mysterious underground network intent on overthrowing the system, and the key to their plan seems to be Annibale Manin, a duty-bound Venetian tour guide. When assigned to escort two wealthy tourists through the lagoon city, he finds himself instead unwittingly swept into an intrigue that hits far closer to home than he could have ever imagined.
Both events offer free admission on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to availability.
