Appena tornato nella sua città il dottor Bennel scopre che diversi suoi pazienti sono affetti da una sindrome paranoica, che li porta a sospettare sulla reale natura dei loro amici e parenti. Dopo un iniziale scetticismo scopre che la cittadina è stata invasa dai baccelli alieni che si insinuano negli uomini fino a sostituirvisi, eliminando qualsiasi traccia di umanità. Si troverà così a dover lottare da solo contro una minaccia che diventa una vera e propria invasione. La produzione impose un finale più ottimistico rispetto al romanzo.

Doctor Bennel’s patients are suffering from a type of paranoia that causes them to doubt the true nature of their friends and relatives. After initial skepticism, he discovers that the town has in fact been invaded by aliens who are taking control of human bodies, eliminating every trace of humanity there once was. He goes on to fight alone against a threat that turns into a serious and real invasion, although he film’s ending is more optimistic that the book it was adapted from.
