In Picuí, Brazil, scientists attempt to eradicate the Aedes Aegypti mosquito -the carrier of dengue fever- through an experiment using uranium. When the plan fails, a Brazilian researcher must stop the catastrophe before it’s too late. Tiago Melo’s pulpy, politically charged sci-fi fuses local myth, dark humour, working-class grit and radioactivity in Brazil’s Northeast. An irresistible genre hybrid combining two central elements: uranium in the territory and the collective memory of the presence of Americans during World War II.

«Yellow Cake came from a desire to look at Brazil through the lens of the near future, without abandoning the urgencies of the present. From the beginning, the idea was to approach science fiction from the backlands of Paraíba, understanding this territory not as an exotic setting, but as a place of thought and invention. The film emerges from the city of Picuí itself: a real place, rich in its own stories, which anchors the absurd within everyday life and becomes the film’s driving force. The starting point was to imagine an extreme public policy, conceived by foreign scientists, that attempts to solve a national problem—the spread of diseases transmitted by Aedes aegypti—through nuclear testing. From there, the film unfolds as both a satire and a reflection on Brazil’s long-standing relationship with global powers that claim to “help,” but often turn the country into a laboratory for their ideas.
Along this path, I was particularly interested in following the trajectory of Rúbia Ribeiro. She represents a Brazilian science that is frequently sidelined. When she arrives in the sertão, Rúbia faces her greatest challenge: locating uranium—a mineral surrounded by mystery, prohibitions, legends, and fear, one that embodies both promises of development and threats of destruction. Through absurd situations and subtle humor, the film seeks to satirize Brazil’s dependence on world powers and to critique foreign hegemonies and their interference in peripheral territories, while also addressing the isolation and prejudice faced by the Northeast of Brazil. These reflections are set against a backdrop of global uncertainty. Since the creation of the atomic bomb, the world has lived under the constant tension that a nuclear- scale conflict could erupt at any moment—an extreme scenario that carries with it the very idea of extinction.»
