Una gravissima crisi economica si abbatte sulla “Federazione Europea”: la siccità ha già quasi distrutto l’agricoltura; le industrie rischiano di chiudere per mancanza di materie prime; la disoccupazione ha raggiunto livelli impressionanti; le istituzioni sono travolte dall’emergenza… I paesi del Terzo Mondo, riuniti nel “Commonwealth of Poor Countries”, sono disposti ad aiutare l’Occidente, ma chiedono l’invio di milioni di lavoratori qualificati in cambio di grano, carbone, petrolio. Il Terzo Mondo, che in passato era la “Cenerentola” dell’umanità, pretende, adesso, di dettar legge alle grandi potenze… L’Olanda, che avverte particolarmente il peso della recessione, invita gli stati federali ad adottare con urgenza una decisione comune, e, per sondare l’umore dei cittadini, affida ad un cervello elettronico l’incarico di scegliere un gruppo di persone, di estrazione sociale e professione diverse, per dar vita ad una sorta di mini-parlamento che faccia emergere i veri bisogni della popolazione. I prescelti si incontrano in assemblea; cominciano le consultazioni, ma, subito, si trovano in forte disaccordo… Roeland Kerbosch proietta i problemi degli anni ’70 in un immaginario prossimo futuro che rovescia il primato del capitalismo e della civiltà industrializzata. Una riflessione sull’oggi che conosciamo e sul domani che ci può aspettare, resa in maniera forse un po’ troppo intellettuale, modulata sui temi della distopia e della fanta-sociologia.

A very serious economic crisis hits the “European Federation”: the drought has already almost destroyed agriculture; industries risk closing due to lack of raw materials; unemployment has reached impressive levels; the institutions are overwhelmed by the emergency … The Third World countries, gathered in the “Commonwealth of Poor Countries”, are willing to help the West, but are asking for the sending of millions of skilled workers in exchange for grain, coal, Petrolium. The Third World, which in the past was the “Cinderella” of humanity, now claims to dictate the law to the great powers … common decision, and, to gauge the mood of citizens, entrusts an electronic brain with the task of choosing a group of people, from different social backgrounds and professions, to create a sort of mini-parliament that brings out the real needs of the population. The chosen ones meet in the assembly; the consultations begin, but, immediately, they find themselves in strong disagreement … Roeland Kerbosch projects the problems of the 70s into an imaginary near future that overturns the primacy of capitalism and industrialized civilization. A reflection on the today we know and on the future that can await us, rendered perhaps a little too intellectual, modulated on the themes of dystopia and fantasy-sociology.
