Realizzato circa un anno prima di Star Wars, questa space opera della Germania dell’Est è un esempio di fantascienza sorprendentemente unico, in cui la Terra non è mai menzionata, mentre l’universo è abitato da culture umanoidi con nomi che suonano palesemente inventati. Una navicella spaziale arriva dal pianeta Cyrno sul pianeta Tem 4 in risposta ad un grido d’aiuto inviato anni prima, soltanto per scoprire che i Temiani non sembrano, in realtà, volere nessun aiuto. Mentre l’equipaggio fedele, comandato dalla sensibile Capitan Akala (Jana Brejchova), cade vittima dell’incantesimo dei padroni di casa edonisti, si insinua il sospetto che c’è qualcosa che non va, così vien fuori che persone apparentemente autoctone sono in realtà dei colonizzatori che sfruttano i Tiri, ovvero gli indigeni veri e propri, obbligandoli a lavorare duramente in un’enorme miniera. La vicenda potrebbe essere facilmente interpretata come un’allegoria dello scontro tra il capitalismo e il comunismo, con la gente di Cyrno che aiuta i rivoltosi a fomentare una rivoluzione. Le risorse garantite da una collaborazione con il Blocco Orientale (la Romania era uno dei partner della produzione) consentono di dar vita a scenografie straordinarie, come deserti scavati dal vento ed enormi miniere, oltre a folle di comparse che riempiono lo schermo.

Made a year or so before Star Wars, this East German space action film is an entry in that surprisingly rare form of science fiction in which Earth is never mentioned, but the universe is inhabited by humanoid cultures with made-up-sounding names. A spaceship from the planet Cyrno arrives on the planet Tem 4 in response to a plea for help sent out years before, only to discover that the Temians don’t seem to want any help. While the stalwart crew, led by sensitive Captain Akala (Jana Brejchova), fall under the spell of their hedonistic hosts, suspicions lurk that there’s something amiss and it turns out the apparent native people are in fact exploitative invaders who are forcing the Tiri, the real indigenous people, to work in a huge mine. It could easily be construed as an allegory of the clash between capitalism and communism, with the Cyrno folk aiding the insurgents in starting a revolution .The resources of an Eastern Bloc collaboration (Romania was a partner in the production) allow for impressive settings like the eroded deserts and huge mines and screen-filling mobs of slave extras.
