Dopo “The Mutants” del 1963-64, i nemici storici di Doctor Who tornano sullo schermo in questa vicenda in sei episodi che rimane una delle apparizioni migliori del “galactic despots” nonché un classico inaffondabile. Doctor Who ed i suoi collaboratori Ian, Barbara e Susan, giungono a Londra nel ventiduesimo secolo e scoprono che i Dalek hanno invaso la Terra e vogliono sostituirne il nucleo con un propulsore. Il copione scritto da Terry Nation, creatore dei Dalek, è uno dei più fantasiosi con riferimenti alla Seconda Guerra Mondiale, alla Resistenza ed al Nazismo ed è reso ancora più efficace da un’ambientazione volutamente non futuristica.

This six-part story, the second appearance of the Doctor’s most formidable foes following “The Mutants” in 1963/64, proved to be one of the best to feature the galactic tyrants throughout the history of the series and remains an enduring classic. The Doctor and his companions, Ian, Barbara and Susan arrive in 22nd century London to find that a Dalek invasion force has conquered the Earth in order to replace the Earth’s core with a propulsion unit. The script by Dalek creator Terry Nation is one of his most imaginative, with analogies to the Second World War and Nazism heightened by the absence of any attempt to render the settings futuristic. The location filming in London is also eerily effective.
