One hundred years after his birth, Italy\u2019s leading science fiction festival pays tribute to Roger Corman, a master of genre cinema, visionary\nproducer and extraordinary talent scout, with a special retrospective running from October to November.<\/p>

Special guest at the Trieste festival will be Julie Corman, producer and wife of the filmmaker, who will guide audiences through the rediscovery of his extraordinary cinematic legacy.<\/p>

Trieste Science+Fiction Festival, Italy\u2019s leading event dedicated to fantastic cinema,\ntaking place from 3 to 8 November in Trieste, celebrates the centenary of Roger\nCorman\u2019s birth, honouring one of the most prolific and influential figures in film history\nwith a major tribute spanning his work as a director, producer and exceptional talent\nscout.\nThe tribute takes on particular significance in Trieste, a city that has been connected to\nCorman\u2019s cinematic history for more than sixty years. His relationship with the event dates\nback to its very beginnings: in 1963, during the first edition of the historic International\nScience Fiction Film Festival, whose legacy Trieste Science+Fiction Festival carries on\ntoday, Corman\u2019s \u201cX: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes\u201d won the festival\u2019s top award. It\nwas the beginning of an enduring relationship, with Corman returning to Trieste several\ntimes as a festival guest and today standing among the great international figures who\nhave shaped its history.\n\nOne hundred years after his birth, Trieste Science+Fiction Festival retraces Roger\nCorman\u2019s extraordinary cinematic journey through six films, selected to showcase the\nmany facets of a filmmaker who moved with remarkable freedom between science\nfiction, horror, Gothic cinema and counterculture, often turning the constraints of\nfilmmaking into an inexhaustible laboratory for invention.<\/p>

Not only a cult director and tireless producer, Corman was also one of the most\nimportant talent scouts in Hollywood history: over the course of his exceptionally long\ncareer, he gave some of the first major opportunities to a generation of filmmakers who\nwould go on to change American cinema forever. It is precisely around these multiple\nidentities - Corman the producer and discoverer of talent on the one hand, and\nCorman the director on the other - that the Festival\u2019s tribute takes shape.<\/p>

The first part of the retrospective will begin before the Festival officially opens, with\nthree screenings at Cinema Ariston in Trieste devoted to Corman\u2019s remarkable ability to\nidentify and launch new talent. Three films and three future masters of world cinema\nwho, at the beginning of their respective careers, found in Corman\u2019s productions a space\nin which to experiment, learn their craft and develop their own cinematic language.<\/p>

The programme begins Friday, 9 October at 10:30 p.m. with Martin Scorsese\u2019s \u201cBoxcar\nBertha\u201d, continues Friday, 16 October at 10:30 p.m. with Joe Dante\u2019s \u201cPiranha\u201d, and\nconcludes Friday, 30 October at 10:30 p.m. with Francis Ford Coppola\u2019s \u201cDementia 13\u201d.\nThese three films highlight one of the most remarkable aspects of Corman\u2019s legacy: his\nability to turn independent productions, limited budgets and tight schedules into a\ngenuine filmmaking training ground, giving young filmmakers both creative freedom\nand concrete opportunities that would ultimately enable them to leave an indelible mark on\nthe history of cinema.<\/p>

The celebration will then move into full swing from 3 to 8 November during the 26th\nedition of Trieste Science+Fiction Festival, once again bringing the very best of\ninternational fantastic cinema to Trieste, with premieres, talks and special guests. The\nsecond part of the tribute will be devoted entirely to Corman the director and his vast\nfilmography, which spans different genres, eras and cinematic worlds, from science fiction\nto horror, from Gothic cinema to satire. From this remarkable body of work, the Festival\nhas selected three films, each representing a different facet of his filmmaking.\n\nRepresenting the most celebrated and widely recognised side of his work will be \u201cThe\nMasque of the Red Death\u201d, one of the high points of Corman\u2019s Gothic cinema and one of\nthe defining films in his acclaimed cycle inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe.\nAlongside one of his best-loved classics, the Festival will rediscover two particularly\nsignificant films from his engagement with science fiction: \u201cGas-s-s-s\u201d, an expression of\nthe irreverent, countercultural spirit that runs through a crucial part of his work, and\n\u201cFrankenstein Unbound\u201d, which marked Corman\u2019s return to directing after a long hiatus\nand offered his own distinctive science-fiction reinterpretation of the Frankenstein myth.\nTogether, these three films capture the remarkable freedom of a filmmaker capable of\nconstantly reinventing himself without ever losing his taste for experimentation,\nindependence and provocation.<\/p>

Making the tribute even more special will be the presence of Julie Corman, producer and\nwife of Roger Corman, who will be a guest at Trieste Science+Fiction Festival and will\nintroduce the screenings dedicated to the director, guiding audiences on a journey\nthrough his work and extraordinary cinematic legacy.<\/p>

The centenary tribute thus also becomes an opportunity to celebrate one of the figures\nwho best embodies the very spirit of Trieste Science+Fiction Festival: a cinema that\nis free, curious, popular and visionary, capable of exploring new worlds while\nsimultaneously paving the way for future generations. It is a vocation deeply rooted in the\nhistory of the Trieste event, which grew out of the legacy of one of Europe\u2019s earliest\nfestivals dedicated to genre cinema.<\/p>
