Among the guests expected for the 2025 edition of the <\/span>Trieste Science-Fiction Festival<\/b> will be <\/span>Gabriele Mainetti,<\/b> acclaimed director of <\/span>\u201c They Called Him Jeeg Robot,\u201d \u201cFreaks Out\u201d <\/i><\/b>and <\/span>\u201c La citt\u00e0 proibita,\u201d <\/i><\/b>who will chair the jury for the <\/span>Asteroide Award,<\/b> the international prize that annually honors the best film by emerging directors in the genres<\/span>science fiction, horror <\/span><\/i>and<\/span> fantasy.<\/span><\/i> <\/span><\/p>\n

Gabriele Mainetti will also participate in <\/span>two events open to the public<\/b> on <\/span>Friday, October 31<\/b>: <\/span>at 6:15 p.m.<\/b> the director will host a public discussion as part of the <\/span>IVIPRO DAYS,<\/b> an annual event dedicated to the video game industry and its ties to the local area and cultural heritage, during which he will discuss his relationship with video games. On the evening of <\/span>Friday, October 31<\/b> Mainetti will present <\/span>two films he has selected at the Teatro Miela in Trieste: <\/b>\u201cThe Fly\u201d<\/i><\/b> by David Cronenberg (1986) and <\/b>\u201c District 9\u201d <\/i><\/b>by Neill Blomkamp (2009),<\/b> two milestones of the fantasy genre that explore not only physical metamorphosis, but also moral, political, and existential transformations. <\/span><\/p>\n

The day of <\/span>Friday, October 31 <\/b>will be packed with movie premieres and must-see events dedicated to all aspects of the fantasy genre. It begins at<\/span> 3:00 p.m. <\/b>at the <\/span>Politeama Rossetti <\/b>with the <\/span>Italian premiere <\/b>in the presence of the director of <\/span>\u201cDisforia\u201d <\/i><\/b>by Christopher Cartagena (Spain, 2025), <\/b>a dystopian film in which <\/span>Funny Games<\/span><\/i> meets <\/span>Knock on the Door<\/span><\/i>, giving rise to a bloody, frenetic, and tension-filled thriller. At<\/span> 3:00 p.m.<\/b> the program continues at the <\/span>Teatro Miela<\/b> with the first selection of short films competing for the M\u00e9li\u00e8s d\u2019argent, <\/span>European Fantastic Shorts Vol. 01<\/b>, while <\/span>at<\/b> 5:00 p.m. <\/b>at the <\/span>Rossetti<\/b>, there will be an <\/span>Italian premiere<\/b> out of competition <\/span>\u201c Osiris\u201d<\/i><\/b> by William Kaufman (United States, 2025),<\/b> in which a special forces unit is abducted by a mysterious spaceship, finding itself in an epic battle for survival. Also at the <\/span>Rossetti <\/b>at<\/span> 8:00 p.m.<\/b>, the following film will be screened in an <\/span>Italian premiere<\/b> in the presence of the director<\/span> \u201cBulk\u201d<\/i><\/b> by Ben Wheatley (United Kingdom, 2025)<\/b>, the acclaimed British director of<\/span> \u201cKiller on the Road\u201d<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>\u201cThe Deserters \u2013 A Field in England\u201d<\/span><\/i>, will present in Trieste an extraordinarily inventive, ironic, and utterly unpredictable science fiction film that draws on a vast array of imagery ranging from Airfix model kits and Thunderbirds puppets to the concepts of Philip K. Dick and the video game universe of <\/span>Zelda<\/span><\/i>. At the <\/span>Teatro Miela<\/b> at <\/span>8:15 p.m.<\/b>, don\u2019t miss the out-of-competition animated film<\/span> \u201c Lesbian Space Princess\u201d<\/i><\/b> by Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese (Australia, 2025), <\/b>a musical comedy <\/span>queer <\/span><\/i>science fiction film starring the shy Princess Saira of the planet Clitopolis, who embarks on an intergalactic mission to save her ex-girlfriend Kiki, who has been kidnapped by the Heterosexual White Men from Outer Space.<\/span> At <\/span>10:00 p.m.<\/b> at the <\/span>Rossetti<\/b> it will be time for the <\/span>Italian premiere<\/b> out of competition of<\/span> \u201cMag Mag\u201d<\/i><\/b> by Yuriyan Retriever (Japan, 2025),<\/b> the first film from K2 Pictures, founded by Takashi Miike, Hirokazu Koreeda, and Miwa Nishikawa, and marks the debut of Yuriyan Retriever, Japan\u2019s most beloved comedy actress, who reinterprets <\/span>J-Horror <\/span><\/i>from a new perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n

Also on <\/span>Friday, October 31<\/b>, the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival will celebrate the 50th anniversary of one of the films that shaped the history of the fantasy genre: the event will take place at <\/span>11:00 a.m.<\/b> at the Teatro Miela with a screening of <\/span>\u201cSane Inside Insanity: The Phenomenon of Rocky Horror\u201d <\/i><\/b>by Andreas Zerr, <\/b>a documentary that reveals the secrets and behind-the-scenes stories of the famous musical \u201c<\/span>The Rocky Horror Picture Show\u201d<\/span><\/i>, a global cult classic of the Midnight Movies scene that will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025. Also at the <\/span> Miela <\/b>at <\/span>5:00 p.m. <\/b>there will be a screening, in the presence of the director, of <\/span>\u201cBlame\u201d<\/i><\/b> by Christian Frei<\/b>,<\/span> a visually striking documentary by the Oscar-nominated filmmaker on the effects of fake news on COVID-19. Also on <\/span>October 31<\/b>, head to the Astronomical Observatory for the Astropassage in Trieste, where, amid science and wonder, children and families can explore the stars alongside researchers from INAF Trieste.
