Se in quel film l\u2019interesse di Szulkin era per l\u2019abilit\u00e0 dei media di plagiare l\u2019opinione in generale, questa volta il regista polacco si dedica esplicitamente alla censura e all\u2019invasione del suo paese. Di conseguenza, sebbene il film sia dedicato a H.G. Wells e a Orson Welles (il cui adattamento radio nel 1938 de \u201cLa Guerra dei Mondi\u201d di Wells caus\u00f2 il panico generale nella costa est dell\u2019America) e ambientato nel 1999, le preoccupazioni che esprime sono molto pi\u00f9 immediate e molto pi\u00f9 potenti. La sceneggiatura di Szulkin si concentra su un reporter della tv locale di nome Wilhelmi che assiste all\u2019arrivo dei Marziani sulla Terra ed \u00e8 utilizzato dalle autorit\u00e0 per legittimare l\u2019invasione. Simile in parte a The Monitors (1968), ma molto pi\u00f9 controllato, il film segue i tentativi disperati di Wilhelmi di raccontare la verit\u00e0 ad un pubblico indifferente che non capisce cosa stia succedendo. L\u2019amara conclusione vede il processo farsa a Wilhelmi, messo in onda sul \u201cNow Better News Show\u201d, che ha rimpiazzato il suo programma di informazione.<\/p>\n

Like Szulkin\u2019s first feature film (Golem, 1979), this is in part a satire on the media. But where Szulkin\u2019s interest in the earlier film was in the ability of the media to mould opinion, his interest here is explicitly with censorship and the invasion of Poland. Accordingly, though the film is dedicated to H.G. Wells and Orson Welles (whose 1938 radio adaptation of Wells\u2019 \u201cWar of the Worlds\u201d caused a mass panic on the east coast of America) and set in the year 1999, its concerns are far more immediate and all the more powerful for being so. Szulkin\u2019s script focuses on a local TV reporter (Wilhelmi) who witnesses the arrival of the Martians on Earth and is used by the authorities to legitimize the invasion. Similar in part to The Monitors(1968), but far more controlled, the film follows Wilhelmi\u2019s desperate attempts to tell an unconcerned and uncomprehending public the truth. The bitter conclusion has Wilhelmi\u2019s show trial being televised on the \u201cNow Better News Show\u201d that replaced his own news programme.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/3″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n
