The long-awaited directorial debut of Makoto Ueda, writer of Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes and River. The Purple Rose of Cairo goes wacky Sci-Fi as Shimokitazawa native playwright Madoka and Sangenjaya-based band member Kazuma separately go and see a movie at the Tollywood independent cinema. But in the movie they each see the other person on screen, Madoka is in the film Kazuma is watching and vice versa. In this impossible multiverse, incidents occur within each other’s stories as both communicate through the screen and work hard to solve the problems that arise in each other’s narratives.

«This is a challenging gimmick film, but it’s also a coming-of-age film that tries to depict the brilliance and frustrations of young people in Shimokitazawa, so we gathered a cast that seems to have a fire lit in their hearts.
I have complete trust in the lead actors, Marika Ito and Kai Inowaki, as we had previously worked together on stage. In addition, there’s Maeda Oshiro’s quick wit that shifts between humor and seriousness, Hinako Kikuchi’s intelligence hidden beneath her mysteriousness, Kaneko Suzuyuki’s sugar-coated madness, Yuya Mikawa’s ferocity that is actually innocence, Takafumi Imai’s rough-and-tumble attitude like a high-class Chinese restaurant, and the invincible, instant-kill buddy duo of Takafumi Ozeki and Kuniyasu Takasa of The Geese who steal the show. And the members of Europe Kikaku have made my gimmicks their own, while each of them shows a brilliance that can only be emitted in film. With such people, we were able to shoot it as if we were making an independent film (which it is), and that was the best Shimokitazawa experience. I was wondering if there was really a towering wall in Shimokitazawa, but it turned out to be a filming hurdle. We laughed and grumbled along the way, and we managed to overcome it. Please watch and see our brilliance and our frustrations.»
