SF8 è una serie antologica di fantascienza composta da 8 singoli episodi e creata dalla MBC, l’Associazione dei Registi coreani e la piattaforma OTT Wavve. Ambientata in un prossimo futuro, la serie affronta svariati temi, quali l’intelligenza artificiale, la realtà aumentata, la realtà virtuale, i robot, i videogiochi, il fantastico, l’horror, i superpoteri e le catastrofi.
Per i registi coreani, il cinema di fantascienza è allo stesso tempo vicino e lontano. I film di fantascienza provenienti dall’Occidente sono stati parte parte del mio percorso per diventare regista. Ma quando è successo, mi sono trovato di fronte un muro da scalare per riprodurre quel desiderio con un linguaggio, un tempo e uno spazio nostri. La fantascienza era considerato un genere inaffrontabile a causa degli alti costi e della mancanza di un pubblico specializzato. Tuttavia, più o meno nell’ultimo decennio, sono stati fatti vari sforzi, nel cinema e nella letteratura, per aprirsi a quel mondo inesplorato. Così, sono cresciuti i lettori e gli spettatori, e la fantascienza, una volta che ha preso piede, è apparsa ovunque attorno a noi. Come rappresentante della Korean Directors’ Guild, sono salpato con altri otto coraggiosi compagni di viaggio, dando il via a un’avventurosa odissea fantascientifica, la cui destinazione finale nessuno conosce. Ad ogni fermata lungo il viaggio, visioni differenti dell’uomo e del futuro faranno capolino e andranno ad arricchire il mondo.

SF8 is a science fiction anthology series of single-episode special dramas created by MBC, the Directors Guild of Korea, and the OTT platform Wavve. Set in a near future, the series tackles the themes of artificial intelligence, augmented reality, virtual reality, robots, games, fantasy, horror, superpowers, and disasters.
To Korean film makers, sci-fi cinema is close yet far. Western sci-fi films were cultivated in my long desire of becoming a film director. But after becoming one, I had to face a very high wall in order to reproduce that desire with our own language, time and space. Science fiction has been regarded as an untouchable genre because of the expensive budget and shortage of audiences. However, in the last decade or so, in both literature and cinema, various efforts have been made to open up to the world of science fiction, an unexplored area. Thanks to that, we have gained more readers and audiences. Now that it has gained speed, science fiction is among us, everywhere. So, as the representative of DGK, I set a boat afloat with 8 warriors onboard, and with reckless courage. I have started the 2020 Odyssey’s sci-fi voyage, and no one knows its final destination. At every stops of the journey, various visions of humans and the future will sprout up and they will enrich the world.
