Gli astronauti Leslie Nielsen, Earl Holliman e Warren Stevens rimangono in secondo piano rispetto all’arguto Robby.
Classic film science fiction, set in the year 2200 A.D. on the planet Altair IV, where an Earth ship lands to contact Professor Morbius (Walter Pidgeon) and his beautiful daughter Alta (Ann Francis). Suddenly the ship (C-57-D) is attacked by an invisible entity, whose beast-like outline is only visible when it touches the vessel’s force-field shield. Nicholas Nayfack’s MGM production has overtones of a whodunit thriller (what is this bizarre alien killer and where does it come from?) and has outstanding technology-from Robby the Robot to the subterranean city of the long-dead Krell race to Morbius’ futuristic home to the spacecraft and cruises. Spacemen Leslie Nielsen, Earl Holliman and Warren Stevens remain second bananas to the witty Robby. Cyril Hume’s screenplay-said to be inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest, is most satisfying. Odd electronics score by Louise and Bebe Barron.

Fred McLeod Wilcox
Fred McLeod Wilcox
He worked for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer for many years and is best known to mainstream audiences for directing the beloved MGM classic Lassie Come Home (1943). Wilcox secured an eternal legacy within the sci-fi genre with his 1956 masterpiece, Forbidden Planet. This landmark film broke ground as the first science-fiction feature set entirely on a foreign planet in deep space, famously translating Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” into a futuristic canvas. Featuring revolutionary electronic music and the iconic Robby the Robot, Wilcox’s visionary direction elevated sci-fi from B-movie status into a realm of serious, high-budget art, inspiring future cinema.
