La maschera del demonio
(Italia, 1960, 86’)
di Mario Bava
con Barbara Steele, John Richardson, Andrea Checchi

In 17th Century Moldova, the witch Asa is sentenced to death together with her lover, and buried in the family crypt. Two centuries later, two careless travellers bring her back to life. She will try to seize the young body of her offshoot Katja. The film is the debut as a director of Mario Bava, great cinematographer and master of special effects: here, with great visual impact, he contends with a story of necrophilia, and the theme of female sexuality as a challenge against authority and repression. A great international success for Bava, the film made Barbara Steele an icon of the horror genre.
