Kris is derailed from her life when she is drugged by a small-time thief. But something bigger is going on. She is unknowingly drawn into the life cycle of a presence that permeates the microscopic world, moving through nematodes (parasites), plant life, livestock, and back again. Along the way, she meets a man who also has this superhuman force. Identity becomes an illusion as they struggle to assemble the loose fragments of wrecked lives.

Writer-director Shane Carruth, a former software engineer born in South Carolina in 1972, burst onto the indie movie scene with his ultra low-budget sci-fi film Primer (2004) that won the Grand Jury Prize and the Alfred P. Sloan Award at the Sundance Film Festival. Carruth finally made a second film, Upstream Color, which was released in 2013 after debuting at the Sundance Film Festival. He is working on his third film, The Modern Ocean.
